On April 23, 2010, Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer surfed a wave over 20 feet high. That same night he won the Monster Tube Award for the best tube of the year for a wave he surfed on April 17th in even more radical conditions.

Media from around the world are enamored of the perfection of Teahupoo’s monster wave. At the same time, surf legends such as Laird Hamilton, Kelly Slater and Manoa Drollet can be found tackling the wave’s cavernous tubes on a regular basis. Here are some photos of this Tahitian celebrity.

Surfers head towards the open ocean to avoid being swallowed by the wave breaking on the reef just a few feet behind them. If you let it take you, it’s going to hurt!

Surfing a near-perfect tube. Errors are punished by the sharp coral reef only a few feet below the surface.
